I thought I'd share with you the retro bathroom project we completed several years ago.
BEFORE:
A little background to this project:
We live in a split (quad-level) home built in 1975. The original bathroom was, as you might imagine, a delightful shade of vomit green. Over the years previous owners made minor, cosmetic changes which sufficed for a long while. In fact, this is how it was when we bought it, and we were fine with that.
But things started to go downhill. Literally. The problem was that when the house was built, the plumbers had cut through the floor joists to install the drain pipe from the toilet. The weight of the cast iron tub had caused the floor to sag. And the tile was installed with thinset directly onto particle board. So after 40 years, my bathroom just sort of gave up. In fact, it started growing mushrooms in the corner between the tub and toilet!
So we tore the bathroom apart, and rebuilt it from the joists up, and the studs out. And since it's my house and I can do what I want, I wanted it to look as though it was a 1940's bathroom. Not a 1970's bathroom.
My dad did the vast majority of the hard work on this one. He was staying with us at the time, so we took full advantage of his presence and his offer to "help".
